IBA Annual Conference 2011, Dubai, 31 October - 4 November. PRE-CONFERENCE REGISTRATION ENDS WEDNESDAY 19 OCTOBER

Dear Colleague,

As the President of the IBA it is an honour for me to cordially invite you to the International Bar Association's 2011 Annual Conference in Dubai, the very first to be held in the Middle East.

It is especially pleasing, and important, that we are in the Middle East this year, at such an exciting time of change and opportunity for the region, giving all our delegates the opportunity to gain real insights into the changing relationships between the region and the wider world. I have no doubt that our vast network of legal professionals from all over the world will have a wonderful experience here in the United Arab Emirates.

We will be honoured to welcome Nobel laureate, seasoned diplomat and international lawyer, Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei as this year's Opening Ceremony Keynote Speaker. Dr. ElBaradei emerged as a high-profile opposition figure in the Egyptian protests that culminated in Hosni Mubarak's resignation. He continues to be a voice for change in Egypt's march toward democracy, calling for open dialogue, transparent legal standards and respect for human rights.

The programme

Open to both members and non-members of the IBA, this year's event will feature - as always - a wide array of substantive sessions, workshops and panels, addressing issues ranging from arbitration to M&A law, from human rights to the ethics of the legal profession, and offering up to 25 CPD/CLE hours.

Networking and business development

Not only an excellent opportunity for professional and personal development, IBA conferences offer unparalleled international networking and business development opportunities. With over4,900 attendees already registered from over 3,000 organisations, businesses, law firms and legal service providers representing 125 different international jurisdictions, Dubai 2011 looks set to be another landmark Annual Conference.

The social programme

In addition to the substantive programme, Dubai 2011 promises all attendees and their guests an unforgettable opportunity to take in the sights, sounds and diversity of Dubai. Beginning with the traditional Opening Ceremony at the DICEC and Welcome Party at the Al Sahra, and ending with the spectacular Closing Party at the Madinat Jumeirah, the week of the conference will see up to 100 dinners, receptions and functions take place in venues all across Dubai and beyond. The main social programme details can be found on pages 75-77 of the programme brochure, and the on main Conference Registration Form.

Committee Social Functions:

Committee Social Functions are now available for booking: arranged by the specialist committees of the IBA, these functions provide members and delegates interested in committee activities to meet informally in a relaxed atmosphere. To register for Committee Social Functions, please download and complete the Committee Social Function Form, and send it with payment details, along with your Conference Registration Form, to the IBA Head Office before Wednesday 19 October.

Accommodation and Tours:

Further information on recommended accommodation and tours in the area during the week of the conference can be found in the Tours and Accommodation Brochure.

I urge those of you who are not already members of the IBA to join now. Not only does it mean a discounted registration fee for the annual conference as well as for the countless specialist conferences the Association holds throughout the year, but there truly is no better 'family' in terms of mutual professional development and networking opportunities. We also need your support to continue all our good work in the areas of human rights and the rule of law around the world. I feel very strongly that we must all work together to bring about peace and a safer, happier world for the people of the world via the tools and skills that our chosen profession has given us.

I look forward to welcoming you in Dubai.

Kind regards,

Akira Kawamura
President, International Bar Association
